Peru: Hand Therapy Blog

Source: Blog Post

As part of the team of volunteer healthcare providers who participated in Hand Help’s 2019 medical trip to Lima, Peru’s Children’s Hospital, there were 2 Certified Hand Therapists. Virginia Ells (OT/CHT) and Adam Crelling (OT/CHT) spent the week working directly with Hand Help’s team of hand surgeons to provide prescribed post-operative care to the children who underwent corrective surgical procedures. Their initial efforts focused on not only fabricating protective and positional orthoses that allowed for optimal hand function but also on family education and early range of motion home exercise programs.

In addition to providing direct care to surgical cases, Virginia and Adam also work alongside the hospital’s local team of PT’s and OTs. They collaborated on complex cases that included upper extremity burns, fracture management with external fixators, benefits of positional splinting for children with cerebral palsy, and reviewed adaptive strategies through the use of “play” to encourage a child to participate in a rehab program. The included photos show some of the cases of the wonderful children and local therapists we had the pleasure of working with during the week.
